How to Stay Motivated as a Writer

Writing isn’t easy. It’s solitary, often unrewarding, and full of setbacks. Right now, with life’s pressures mounting and six books out with zero sales, I’m asking myself: Why do I still write? And more importantly, how do I keep going?
After diving into some research and reflecting on my own experience, here are the key takeaways that help me stay motivated:
1. Remember Your Why
Every writer has a core reason for writing. For me, it starts with the simple fact that I have to create. Writing helps me understand myself, stay true to who I am, and navigate the world.
Beyond that, I want to share stories—stories that entertain, spark imagination, and help readers see pieces of themselves in new worlds.
Then there’s my passion for encouraging young people to read. Long-form content is competing with quick dopamine hits, but nothing compares to the emotional and cognitive connection built through a great book. I want to share the beauty of that with young people. It’s such a gift.
And finally, there’s the career dream. The frosting. I’d love to expand my teaching into the realms of creative writing coaching, get my books into schools, and—let’s be real—actually make money doing what I love.
2. Set Goals (Even If You’re a Free Spirit)
I’m terrible at goal setting. My New Year’s resolution was to do it, and… well, let’s just say my Sagittarian free spirit took over.
That said, I do have a direction. It’s just a swirling mess in my head. I need to get better at writing things down, checking them off, and giving myself tangible progress markers. I absolutely believe this would help me to stay motivated as a writer and lead to more success.
3. Build a Daily Writing Habit
This one, I’ve nailed. Writing has become so ingrained that skipping a day feels strange. (More on that in this blog post.)
4. Find Inspiration and Connect with Other Writers
Books inspire me. My author groups keep me grounded. I wish I had a writing buddy to swap work with—maybe that person is reading this right now?
Even social media, despite its chaos, keeps me accountable. Maintaining this blog, for example, is its own form of motivation.
5. Be Kind to Yourself and Celebrate Small Wins
This one’s simple but crucial. Self-compassion matters. And so do the people who cheer you on, even when you feel like quitting. The smallest encouragement can keep the fire burning. I’m beyond grateful for my supporters—they help me believe in myself when doubt creeps in.
Writing is tough, but so are we. If you’re struggling with motivation, take a step back and reconnect with your why and step through everything I've mentioned - is there something here that can help? And if you need a writing buddy? I’m here.
